Overalls

OVERALLS
Well, she's gotta lotta sass
and a special kind of energy
And she's way too fast and a bit too young
for a chill ol' dog like me.
But with the pep in her step
and the shine in her eye
and a can-do spirit that says, "Do or Die!"
It's her overalls that really burn in my memory.
Yeah... Her OVERALLS...
...a playful innocence with a sweet n' low maintenance.
In those OVERALLS...
I see her climbin' trees, sippin' hooch and shootin' the breeze.
Then I find myself thinkin' how she takes it all off -
a dirty thought, I know it's true
But then again, it might be flattering to her-
depending on her point of view!
I just wish I looked good on her like her overalls do!
Well, Mr. Lambert is a fella
who can hack it in a rugged place.
A bowl of mashed potatoes can best describe
the poor old sucker's face.
But Wind River's having trouble so some justice calls
for tracking down some goons 'till the last one falls
And he does it in his overalls with a silent grace.
Yeah...his OVERALLS...
help him win the fight and set some really wrong things right
In his OVERALLS...
he's a Wild West sleuth shootin' straight and speakin' the truth!
And I find myself thinkin' how he makes it out there-
where the cold lonely winter blows
I guess ya' gotta start by taking out the trash-
and taking in old-fashioned clothes!
I 'spose the man in overalls is the one who knows!
I'm tired of the spandex
walkin' round left and right.
Like the Grinch's too-tight fitting socks,
they make y'all so uptight!
But if the woman talking to me on my old phone
or the hombre clearing vermin outta my home
are wearing overalls, then I feel it's gonna be alright!
Let's hear it for... OVERALLS!!!
making sense in this age of decadence
I'm diggin' those OVERALLS...
just a little bit loose as opposed to another noose.
And I find myself thinking what my town needs the most-
a touch of something more old-school
So, strap 'em on proud and let the buttons shine
There's nuthin' else I think is so cool!
So don your overalls and join me on this old, bar stool!
And I find myself thinkin' that it's time to lighten up-
like an Osh Kosh B'gosh kid!
Or rest our tired thumbs on those trusty old straps-
like my great-grand-pappy did!
Let's deck the halls with overalls from Beijing to Madrid!
Let's deck 'em all with overalls from Sweet Sue to Big Sid!
I'm diggin' those OVERALLS!!!!
Oh, yeah! π

Another Beautiful Day
04:40

|

5/31/23
Another beautiful day has come to shine
Though the sniffles have got me down,
I can say for sure that a little rest is fine.
I can write a lazy song
or even hit my buddy's bong
And it's nice to know that the choice is always mine.
And if I see a storm is coming,
it just means that I can still read all the signs.
Oh, it's a beautiful day to rock or roll
I can doze off in the sunlight
or just take my air guitar out for a stroll
I can feel, hear, and see
a long list of maladies
but it's nice to know that it will not sink my soul
And if the grass grows up around me,
it just means that I'm not down a big black hole.
(Chorus)
Perfection's not the grail,
but we can still prevail
to do it well or just a little bit better.
And now you'll hear me say
and play that old cliche
that so much in this life rides on the weather.
Oh, what a beautiful day for all to see
We can count all of the reasons
when many more still yearn to be this free.
We can dream, sing or smile
or do nothing for a while
God, it's nice to know when the light shines down on me.
And if I catch the blues tomorrow,
it just means that now is my sweet jubilee.
(Chorus)
Perfection's not the grail,
but we can still prevail
to do it well or just a little bit better.
And now you'll hear me say
and play that old cliche
that so much in this life rides on the weather.
It's a beautiful day.

I coulda' been a contender
I coulda' been on the top
I coulda' been someone who gave his all
before he knew when he had to stop.
And I curse the reasons why
I took that dive and came up dry
No second chance; I kissed that one good-bye
Now I'm doomed to remember...
I coulda' been a contender.
I coulda' been a contender
I coulda' been the champ
I coulda' been someone who drove it home
before he went down the freeway ramp
And I curse the reasons why
I bought their words and got snake-eyed
No friends of mine; I've told those bums good-bye
But I'm doomed to remember...
I coulda' been a contender
But there's no time for regrets
or those crooked inside bets
or the easy pitch that's too good to be true.
If we are Kith and Kin,
then, dammit, help me win
And when life's a bitch
just say you'll help me through
...and I'll believe in me
...and I'll be sure
to believe in you.
I coulda' been a contender
I coulda' been the man
I coulda' been someone who took his chances
before he took the bait and ran
And I curse the reasons why
I fell so low and came up shy
No road to bliss; I shoulda' reached for the sky
So I'm doomed to remember
I was just another pretender
who was lured into surrender....
God...I coulda' been a contender.
But there's no time for regrets
or those crooked inside bets
or the easy pitch that's too good to be true.
If we are Kith and Kin,
then, dammit, help me win
And when life's a bitch
just say you'll help me through
...and I'll believe in me, my friend
...and I'll be sure
to believe in you.
And maybe again one, sunny day
I can say...
I'm still a contender! π

It's All About Fear
05:04

|

Our TV screens are wastelands
The new and old both stink
Looking at all those stupid ads,
I'll tell you what I think. π€
They say their way or no way
for the all-American Dream
But, what I see is fear and lies
that claim to be supreme
-A cocophany of blasphemy
Stay the hell away from me!
Park your pitches in your rear.
'Cuz I know that it's all about fear!
If I don't get that Comcast deal
then I'm called a low-tech "bore"
If I'm not there on Facebook
then I'll have my "friends" no more
If I don't start some Twitter thread
then I'm "aloof" and "tame"
If I ain't got no house or car
then I ain't got no "game."
Hey, I don't need to play some role
on a cranked-up TV show
Or copy plastic lifestyles
just to fake the way I flow
They say their way or no way
for the all-American Dream
But what I see is fear and lies
done-up like sweet ice cream
-A cocophany of blasphemy
Stay the hell away from me!
If I don't cheer for dicks like Trump
then I'm labeled a "lib-tard"
If I'm not hard-core Vegan
then all I am is "lard"
If I don't buy my girl a diamond
then I'm denounced as "cheap"
If I don't own the mountaintops
then I'm "low among the sheep". π
Yo, I don't need a phony friend
to like me me for my "things"
All I need is stuff that works
and ease when freedom rings.
They say their way or no way
for the all-American Dream
But, what I see is fear and lies
shot out like laser beams!
-A cocophany of blasphemy
Stay the hell away from me!
Blow your pitches out your rear
'Cuz I know that it's all about fear!
Yes, FEAR!
FEAR, people, FEAR!
It's all about FEAR! πΊ π€― π₯
If I don't wear some skinny jeans
they'll say that I'm a "slob"
If I don't boast a choking tie
then forget that "fancy" job
If I don't do a deep dive soon
then I'll never get that pearl
If I don't keep fine china 'round
then I'm sure no "Duke of Earl."
If I don't make 6 figures quick
then I'm called no "ladies' man"
If I don't roll my dice on stocks
then I have no "Master" plan
If I don't pop those Tic-Tacs
then I guess my breath will "smell"
If I don't pray to Jesus Christ
then I'll go "straight to Hell." π
Well, I don't need to join a club
to make my kind of friends
Or triumph in those shark tanks
where the madness never ends
They say their way or no way
for the all-American Dream
But, what I see is fear and lies
still taken to extremes.
-A cocophany of blasphemy
Stay the hell away from me
Blow your pitches out your rear
'Cuz I know that it's all about fear!
Yes, FEAR!
FEAR, people, FEAR!
It's all about FEAR! πΊ π€― π₯

Don't ask me how I'm doing when you
pass me on the street or in the hall
when the sad fact of the matter is quite clear
that you don't really care at all.
You've had your chances
to try my dances
and you don't want me to make any advances.
And that's O.K.
but I won't play
a tool you need when you must have your way.
(No way!)
The years have trickled quickly and you
never once have offered me a chair.
If you will not reciprocate, we're through
and I can say that's only fair.
I don't need your smile
or your wispy guile
or silent judgement that you've made for quite a while
While I'm no hunk,
I'm not a skunk
and I sure don't have dead bodies in my trunk.
(I don't even have a car)
I find myself now wishing that you'd
pack your bags and simply move away.
And I'd get a brand-new neighbor who can hang
and give me high 5s everyday.
Now, you're not a riot
and I'd miss your quiet
and the inspiration from your lovely diet.
But for my taste,
you're still 2-faced
and where I stand I think your head's in outer space.
(or just a medieval place)
Yeah, you're 2-faced and outer-spaced
and I don't owe you a thing.
You're just 2-faced and outer-spaced
but it's still real fun to sing!
Yeah, you're 2-faced and outer-spaced
and I sure do know the score.
You're just 2-faced and outer-spaced
and you won't use me no more!
So...don't ask me how I'm doing and I
promise I won't tell you any lies.
Let's keep it down to quick "Hello"s
or quicker nods or the quickest of "Good-bye!"s π

The Phantom Dive

6/24/23
It was Christmas time, 2001
the end of a downbeat year.
A boy-prince fool had stolen office
9/11 stirred up the fear.
But upon my graduation
it was time for a celebration
So my trio cruised 'round Mesa
just to find ourselves a beer.
It rose like a lump from nowhere
a slab in a parking lot
with a neon sign that pulled us in
from the blighted, urban rot.
And the door did read "We're Open"
So we walked ourselves right in
And we sure looked real "booksmart", man
but "streetwise" we did not!
And the time to come was sure to be
our 1-Time only shot.
The grizzly barflies whipped their heads
and they sized us up real quick.
But the 80s jukebox cast a spell
with a real, nice twangy lick.
We nodded and they did, too
and even said ,"Hi, how are you?"
The barkeep ladies showed the chairs
and they let us take our pick.
Those dames had to be 'round 60
in just bras, high-heels and thongs.
They were dishing piss in honey jars
and boppin' heads to the po-dunk songs.
They called us "a pretty sight"
and they praised our "pearly whites"
while the faded posters of Bud Light babes
looked so hot and wrong.
And the dollar-brews were sure to be
our 1-Time get-along.
Through the smoke we spied the bathroom
at the far end down the hall
The bikers walkin' in and out
not saying much at all.
But they sniffed loud quite a bit
from the goods that get ya' lit.
And the old dolls just kept pouring drinks
like there was no last call.
And above our wobbly table
where we shared our frosty rounds
Its stump nailed to the ceiling -
the inverted Christmas tree stabbed down.
The walls were shot and battered
The pool table - cracked and tattered.
It made us wonder what these folks did
to make their way in town.
But the tunes and booze and welcome were
a 1-Time triple crown!
And so we thanked them for the service
and we rolled home for the night
But when we tried to find it once more
it had vanished out of sight.
We had passed the Twilight Zone-
A phantom dive right to the bone.
And I won't judge that ragged bunch
but I'm glad that we were white.
And it could be how they let us live was
our 1-Time only right.
Yeah, the Phantom Dive was meant to be
a 1-Time only deal.
-a place and time I should leave behind
but a joint that felt so real
-where you can muse and tell some jokes
as long as you don't squeal.
Yeah, the Phantom Dive still blows my mind
and I swear ... it was real.
Hell yeah! It was real!
Here's to the Phantom Dive! π₯
I'm real glad we made it out alive!

Ol' Reliable Trusty
04:57

9/24/23
He's a good ol' brown dog
Who's long lost the scent
But he's still out there sniffin'
for where it done went.
And that bloodhound's still lookin'
for that long gone lost bone
as the full moonlight beckons
his lone, howling moan.
He's a good ol' brown dog
who's way past his prime
His thoughts full of memories
he's forgotten with time.
And he's done catchin' crooks
He just wants some love.
A scratch on the ol' noggin'
fits just like a glove. π₯
You might be an old timer.
Well, Trusty is, too.
And he won't ask for much -
'cept a hug, pat or two.
The sad eyes you both share
with old yearnings laid bare.
That Trusty won't leave you
Yeah, he's always there!
Because...
He's Trusty. Yeah, Trusty.
Ol' Reliable Trusty.
A finer pooch, you'll never find.
A friend to all those who are kind!
He's a good ol' brown dog
who's done paid his dues.
His skin folds like pancakes
while he belts out his blues.
His honor's without question
You can bet your last dime.
He'll watch your back kindly
'till he runs out of time.
Because...
He's Trusty. Yeah, Trusty.
Ol' Reliable Trusty.
A finer pooch, you'll never find.
A friend to all those who are kind!
That's Trusty. Good ol' boy, Trusty.
Ol' Reliable Trusty.
A finer pooch, you'll never find.
A friend to all those who are kind!
TRUSTY
Yeah, Trusty
That's Trusty!

Burn

8/13/23
I've got songs to share with you
I've got songs, red, white and blue
I've got songs that aim to make a better day.
I've got songs for guys and dolls
I've got songs to bring down walls
I've got songs to let the chips fall where they may.
I've got songs to make you smile
I've got songs to weigh a while
I've got songs to let you know you're not alone.
I've got songs to help you sleep
I've got songs to make you leap
I've got songs for those who roll just like a stone.
I try to keep the world from going under
But tonight I'll let another take a turn
It's a good night to kick back
and sip a bit of Jack
and drift away and simply let it burn.
Yeah, the gentle rain sways me to let it burn.
(Through my veins....as it rains)
I've got songs of where I've been
I've got songs of pride and sin
I've got songs of what it takes to write a song.
I've got songs for modest heroes
I've got songs for rowdy zeroes
I've got songs right from the heart for right or wrong.
I try to calm the world from all the thunder
While there's too much for which I'll always yearn
It's a good night to kick back
and sip some more of Jack
and drift away and let it all just burn.
Yeah, the gentle rain sways me to let it burn.
(Through my veins...as it rains).
I've got songs for winding down
I've got songs to rock the town
I've got songs to say you don't know 'till you try.
I've got songs for all the ages
I've got songs to turn the pages
I've got songs to sing until the day I die.
I've got songs to celebrate
I've got songs to caution hate
I've got songs to show the people that I tried
I've got songs of good times gone
I've got songs to bring them on
I've got songs to boast the burn I cannot hide.
I try to heal the world that's torn asunder
But tonight I'll let another take a turn
It's a good night to kick back
with my trusty, steady Jack
and drift away and let it all just burn.
Yeah the gentle rain sways me to let it burn.
(Through my veins... as it rains)
Yeah, the gentle rain sways me
and Jack whispers as gently
that I am free to simply let it burn.

I've got songs about my friends
I've got songs to make amends
I've got songs about what I believe is right.
I've got songs about the weather
I've got songs to make it better
I've got songs to help us all get through the night.
I've got songs for all my ladies
I've got songs about the 80s
I've got songs about the hell of hunger pains.
I've got songs about dim bars
I've got songs about bright stars
I've got songs of what I've lost for all my gains.
And I try to keep the world from going under
But tonight I'll let another take a turn
It's a good time to kick back
and sip a bit of Jack
and drift away and let it all just burn.
And the pouring rain sways me to let it burn!
(Through my veins...as it rains).
I've got songs that hail tomorrow
I've got songs of old, past sorrow
I've got songs that look at what lies in between.
I've got songs about our fears
I've got songs for happy tears
I've got songs of nifty places you ain't seen.
I've got songs that bless forgiveness
I've got songs for bros I still miss
I've got songs that speak for rebels on the fringe.
I've got songs that show regret
I've got songs you won't forget
I've got songs that surely make a few folks cringe.
And I try to calm the world from all the thunder
While there's too much for which I'll always yearn
It's a great time to kick back
and sip some more of Jack
and drift away and let it all just burn.
Yeah, the pouring rain sways me to let it burn!
(Through my veins... as it rains)
I've got songs of lust and love
I've got songs that push and shove
I've got songs that make us wanna go back home.
I've got songs that praise persistence
I've got songs that shout resistance
I've got songs that come from everywhere I roam.
I've got songs born of the blues
I've got songs that bring good news
I've got songs to bear and songs I love to play.
I've got songs that sound concerning
I've got songs of passion burning
I've got songs to burn that will not go away!
Still, I try to heal the world that's torn asunder
But right now I'll let another take a turn
It's a good time to kick back
with my trusty, steady Jack
and drift away and let it all just burn!
Yeah, the pouring rain sways me to let it burn!
(Through my veins...as it rains)
Yeah, the pouring rain sways me
and Jack tells me patiently
that I am free....to let it all just burn!
Let it burn!
Sometimes ya' gotta let it burn.
Yeah! Feelin' good!
Sometimes you gotta let it burn
So gimme a little more burn.
Yeah, gimme a little more burn!
Yeah, gimme a little more BURN! π₯
